Check out our new drummer, Mark LeBlanc, rock a killer drum solo during the OC County Fair this year. Did we mention he has some skills?
After taking a few months break to regroup and reorganize, we are back with a renewed sense of purpose. We wanted to take a little time to explain some of the recent changes with the band and introduce a couple new members. You may have already seen the updated band page with the member bios, so some of you may be asking, “Who are these 2 new guys?”.
Before we dive into the new members, we wanted to give thanks to our former Bass player, Justin Crane and Drummer, Tommy Gujda. Without these two vital members of the band we would have never achieved Best Reggae/Dub band in Denver; that’s a FACT! Both Justin and Tommy put in the man hours to bring Coral Thief where it is today. We appreciate the time and effort that they put into Coral Thief, and we wish them well in their future projects.
We are excited to announce our 2 new members! Some of you have had the privilege to see us perform while we were out in Utah, but for the rest of you I would like to introduce Daren Morales and Mark LeBlanc!
Daren Morales hails from the country of Panama. Having been born and raised in Central America, Daren was exposed to many different varieties of music genres. Daren started playing Spanish classical guitar at age thirteen and decided by fifteen that bass was what he wanted to do. Daren was influenced mostly by his bass virtuoso uncle Mahlon Hawk. Daren has played in ska, reggae, punk, rock, metal, emo, blues, classic rock, cover, country rock and even German folk bands from Panama, Germany and now the state of Colorado. He has opened for many big named bands over the years.
Mark feels like he’s been playing drums as long as he’s been breathing. Rhythm is in his soul. Mark’s father (Mark LeBlanc, Sr) introduced him to the drums and he received his first drum set on his first birthday. His friends started a band with him in the third grade. As middle school rolled around, Mark started learning the rudimental side of drumming and got involved in drum line.
High school helped him refine his drumming style as he studied under Arjuna Contreras and Dan Neimeyer (Both of the Madison Scouts and the UNT drumline) and he quickly developed a love for core style drumming. After high school, focus was on playing the drum set, but he never lost the love for the core style.
Playing in an improv drum ensemble, running a street drum line, touring with a band called Egress for the past four years, recording several cd’s with them and a number of other artists, it’s easy to see how busy he can get. He is also currently the drummer for a “Sublime” tribute band from San Diego California called, 40 oz to Freedom. Some of you may have heard of them…
Over the years developing an appreciation for many different styles, he has played in jazz bands, samba lines, percussion ensembles, hand drum groups, concert bands, and a Latin jam band. Years of formal education, combined with a lifetime of experience with the instrument, has given him a genuine love for drum styles and wants to see the art expand and grow.
We are all feeling greatly humbled by winning this year’s Denver Westword Music Showcase award for best Reggae/Dub band in Denver. There were so many other great bands in our genre and we have to give it up to all of them, along with our fans, for making this possible. We most certainly couldn’t have done it without you!
There is a lot more news to spread to our fans coming up here in the next couple of days. But make sure if you live in the Salt Lake City area (SLC) to check out our Facebook page for a couple of shows we will be playing there 7/19 & 7/20! Stay posted for some more amazing news that will be sure to BLOW YOUR MIND. Until then, thanks to everyone involved, ESPECIALLY Alameda Wellness Center for sponsoring our category and giving us the glorious plaque you see above. MUCH LOVE! And last, but most certainly not least, DENVER WESTWORD for showing us some major love.
